Windows7Firewall Control Startup

Windows7Firewall Control Startup

Postby drm200 » Fri Jan 14, 2011 2:10 pm

I have the portable version of Windows7Firewallcontrol portable Plus version.

I'd like the program to autostart when windows 7 starts up. I first tried by adding a shortcut to W7FC in the windows startup directory. However, the program does not autostart when I boot windows. (If I double click on the shortcut link after starting windows, it starts without problem).

Next I tried a different approach by creating a task to start W7FC using the task scheduler with "run with highest privledges" set. However, it still does not autostart.

How can I autostart W7FC when windows starts?

W7FC portable requires elevated admin privileges to start and auto-elevates if required.
The privileges are actually required for accessing the underlying network core in full.
Most probably Windows suppresses elevation for the auto-starting applications.
Being suppressed from the elevation the portable version can not start.
"run with highest privileges" does not mean admin privileges as well and should be rather treated as highest possible privileges.
The problem is in the inability to operate with the elevation prompt in the particular startup context.
The limitation looks reasonable in terms of security.

We will try to investigate the problem in the details ASAP.
The only idea we have for now is settings W7FC portable in an autorun.inf file of a portable device or tune the limitation related policy (if any)

Thanks for the reply. I'm not using it on a portable device. I am using it on my laptop. I chose the portable version so as not to need to install the software. This is just my preference, as it is a big pain sometimes to re-install all your software if something goes wrong.

The laptop I run this on is my personal laptop. I set my own admin privileges. Should I not be able to autorun as I am setup as an administrator?

Does the non-portable version have the ability to autostart?

I just purchased the software two days ago. So if there is no solution for the portable version will my key code work on the non-portable version (assuming the program can autostart with windows)?

The desktop (not portable) version has easy installation and compete (without any traces) deinstallation. Moreover the desktop version starts with the system boot and so protects applications better, during the startup as well.

>Should I not be able to autorun as I am setup as an administrator?

Vista and Windows7 introduced so called UAC (UserAccessControl), so Administrator is treated as a regular user till an application launch is explicitly elevated to the real administrator privileges.

>Does the non-portable version have the ability to autostart?

Non-portable (desktop) version has 2 separate binaries – the service (started under System privileges) and the control panel, which does not require Admin rights.
So the desktop version has no problems with autostart.

The license code is universal. You just must have no concurrent product installations
