Windows 7 Internet Time Synchronization

Windows 7 Internet Time Synchronization

Postby ogryzek » Wed Feb 24, 2010 10:31 pm

I use Windows 7 Pro; Windows 7 Firewall Control 3.0.3.21 paid ver.

I have problems troubleshooting Internet Time Settings synchronization.

When Firewall Control is in Normal mode the synchronization fails.

While in Enable All mode, it will go through with no problem.

The issue is that I cannot tell which application is responsible for communication with outside time servers.

Can anybody point me in the right direction...

Thanks

We have no strict information for which port is used for the time synchronization at the moment.
It could be most probably
ntp 123/tcp Network Time Protocol
ntp 123/udp Network Time Protocol

also could be
daytime 13/tcp Daytime (RFC 867)
daytime 13/udp Daytime (RFC 867)
time 37/tcp Time
time 37/udp Time

So please check the blocking log for blocking notifications attempt to the ports above. The found notification will show the target application name.

If you find the target application/port/address data please inform us, we will add an enabling rule to the default repository.

Ha...

I actually got the same resolution as the above post by Jerra

Using What's Running? utility it was a quite obvious that the Adjust Time/Date; Internet Time; Change Settings; Internet Time Settings utility is actually run by the Host Process For Windows Services (aka svchost.exe)
From that point on it was a snap.
Still it might make sense to have Security Zones presets updated so that Local+DNS+DHCP+Update(svchost) zone will include entry for NTP using UDP Protocol on Port 123 Outgoing

BTW. For those who need a decent process monitor with good IP connections pane take a look at http:// (blocked by the site admin, check the forum rules please)

Cheers

How do we get Zone-updates anyway?

Just open the zone editor and manage the rules
The default zone repository is changed accordingly and will be available in the next beta.
