Programs blockt although permission is given?

Programs blockt although permission is given?

Postby furryhamster » Thu Dec 16, 2010 8:15 am

Hi,

im using Windows 7 64bit and Windows 7 firewall controll lite 4.

The firewall is working great but i have 2 programs (XBMC and OTR decoder) which cant connect to the internet. I gave the permission "Allow all" for these programms. For the first time it works but after closing and restarting the programm it cant connect to the internet. Unter "programms" the programms are marked as "enableall".

Is the any possibily to solve this problem?

Do you see any blocking notification immediately after the connection attempts failed?
W7FC typically specifies the blocking reason precisely; sometimes application activity (uPnP discovery, for instance) can be generated in the name of other processes/services.

What kind of network connections/operations are blocked of XBMC, for instance

The block can also be made by a third party firewall/antivirus.
Please set TrayIcon/RightClick/Mode:EnableAll temporarily. This switches W7FC off.
If the problem remains under Mode:EnableAll W7FC is not involved in the problem directly.

thank you for response :)
i installed the current beta version of W7FC. this seem to solve the problem with xbmc.

Nevertheless i have a problem with the other programm.

here is a screenshot of the ballon tip
http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/4803/blocked.jpg

i dont know what kind kind of connection it is. the programm tries to check whether an account exists.

third party firewalls are not installaed. just the win 7 firewall is activated. moreover i habe antivir installed.

if i activated the enable all mode the programm works correctly

So the problem with the “decoder for decoding..” application only?
It’s simple if so.
The “detection” label means the application was non-listed before and initially tried to establish “outgoing” (as marked) connection to the specified IP:port.

W7FC blocks any initial connection attempt of non-listed application, then W7FC lists the application with the default zone and prompts (offers) you to choose a proper zone for the application.
Anyway the initial access attempt is blocked. That’s the main specifics you have faced.

The only action you have to do is settings an allowing zone to the application and forcing the application to re-connect (if the app is not able to do that automatically). Sometimes the application does not have manual/automatic re-connect option and so you have to just restart the application.
Being listed after initial detection the application will follow the selected zone permanently. So if you (say) set EnableAll to the application the application will not be limited for the network connections anymore.

the problem is that the program is already in the list (see Screenshot )

when i start the programm (on every start it tries to connect) W7FC doesnt ask for permission (because it is in the list?! ) although the permission for the decoder is set to enable all it is not able to connect.

when i delete the decoder from the programs list and start the decoder again, im able to set to "enable all" and the program can connect. after a second start W7FC dont ask for permission and the decoder cant connect until i activate the "allowall zone".

EDIT:
Today i got the same problem with XBMC again. In the program list it is set to "allow all". i get the following popup:

We tried to reproduce the problem with XBMC without any success. W7FC works smoothly.
We suspect the following scenario however.
After the application (XBMC for instance) is detected and set with EnableAll there is a third party “enhancer” (or a specific the application feature) that removes all the application enabling rules from the underlying security core. The third party mistakenly expects that any related rule found is disabling and removes the rule in spite of the rule was actually enabling. As the result, the application has no network access being listed.

You delete the listed application, allow the application detection, the application is detected and the cycle repeats.
To recover the application rules you could just re-apply the same EnableAll zone to the application.
We have no idea at the moment for what kind of third party could be on your system but there is a reason suspect a third party (or the application specifics)
Please verify other installed security related applications (firewalls, antivirus, etc if any) and/or XBMC/OTR addons/plugins.
Additionally if you would like to continue the investigations we could offer you the logging version of W7FC. If you help us to find/fix a related problem at W7FC side we would be happy to grant you free license for the Plus version.

i just tested the last version of xbmc which released a few days ago.

i deinstalled the old version so i can be sure to have just the regular plugins.
Moreover i deleted the entry in w7fc.

after starting xbmc i set the permission to "allow all". it works correctly. after restarting xbmc it still works. the i shuted w7fc down an startet it again. xbmc still works....
after a complete restart of the pc i got the old problem.

atm i just have avira antivir installed. i deactivated the guard, deaktivated the windows 7 integrated firewall and i added xbmc.exe to the windows 7 integrated firewall list. nothing helped.

i dont have an idea which third party programm i installed which may cause the problem. unter processes in task manager i killed all programms which was possible.

same with the decoder programm i mentioned.

what kind of data is the logging version of w7fc logging? over what period of time i would need to use the logging version? moreover i will try to reproduce the problem with my notebook

EDIT:
I just tested both programs on my notebook with the w7fc version 3.5.1.131 and the newest version. both programs get a connection....

>what kind of data is the logging version of w7fc logging?

Underlying filtering rule dump and the related operations.

>over what period of time i would need to use the logging version?

If the problem is stably reproducible you would need just to reproduce the problem under the logging.

We will PM you the links shortly.
