Peer2Peer Zone ?

Peer2Peer Zone ?

Postby ruckb » Wed Apr 20, 2011 7:43 am

Hello,
I would have some (stupid) questions, and hope I can get here some answers:
there is one pre-configured zone called Peer2Peer Zone, but I do not see any rules / explanations for this. For other zones I do see the rules for incoming and outgoing connections when double clicking it in the zones tab, but the Peer2Peer Zone is emtpy.
Can somebody explain whats behind this zone (for some applications this one is suggested by Win7 Firewall controll..)

And second (just to confirm if my understanding is correct).
in the free version I can only enable or disable all. So it is not possible to use an application on the local System or the whole Web, correct ?
I checked the AVM Fritz!Protect and some applications that pop up in the Windows 7 Firewall controll do not even show up in the AVM tool, so my thinking is, that these applications would anyhow not connecto to the web, but just provide service in the LAN ...

But I'm a newbie in Firewall control and so my understanding might be completely wrong ..

Best regards

Hermann

Peer2Peer zone is a reasonable placeholder for peer-to-peer applications as Skype, instant messengers, torrents etc actually. The applications require bidirectional activity via randomly chosen port typically. The Perr2Peer zone is enabling and does not include any blocking rules, so the zone as functionally equal to EnableAll at the moment by default. Unlimited network access is the most reasonable choice for the mentioned applications; however the choice should not be equal to EnableAll always and unconditionally, so Peer2Peer zone is offered

Regarding AVM

>in the free version I can only enable or disable all. So it is not possible to use an application on the local System or the whole Web, correct ?

Correct. The free version does not allow permissions changing for “system” (formally located in c:\windows\*) applications as well. However all the applications are listed.

W7FC lists all the applications with expressed network activity, regardless of enabled or disabled finally, regardless of locally or publicly active.
There is a lot of other ways to list network related applications.
We have no information of AVM details, application listing details especially.
