higher CPU load after network connectivity change

higher CPU load after network connectivity change

Postby nieroster » Tue Jul 26, 2011 9:27 am

I noticed ultimately that W7FWC causes significant higher CPU load when network connectivity has changed (i.e. disable WIFI and enable WIFI, using a VPN connection and disconnecting VPN again, deactivating the current network adapter and reactivating it, ...).

I causes about 10% to 20% CPU load on a more or less constant basis. When I restart Windows7FirewallControl.exe it is immediately back to normal (close to 0% CPU load).

Is this a known behaviour?

We did not notice any significant CPU occupation while connectivity changes occur.
W7FC does perform a check for network adapter list related changes.
The check is scheduled once per the version update.
After the update W7FC recreates (updates) per adapter (LAN prefixed) rules. Sometimes the adapters are not assigned with an IP immediately and comes with 0.0.0.0 IP, so W7FC rechecks the adapter and when the adapter is set with a valid (non-zero) IP, W7FC iterates through all the zones in the zone list (zone repository) and change the rules IPs accordingly.
Anyway it happens only once per update.

Might we offer you a logging version to trace the reason of permanent “updates” if any
OS? W7FC version? 32 or 64?

Well I just reproduced it:
Disabling the network adapter, enabling it again => higher CPU load and the tray icon does not respond any more to clicks. Seems like it runs in a loop.

Yes I would like to try the logging version, I am using Win7 x64 latest W7FWC (4.1.18.88)

The problem arises while W7FC trying to reforward the uPnP port(s) after local IP address changes. The network connectivity change causes the IP change as well. However IP assigning hardware tries to keep the same IP typically.
Anyway 4.1.20 should have the fix

Since I use 4.1.20 I notice an error message everytime a new drive gets connected or detached from my computer. Be it an USB drive, a network drive or even an encrypted drive using truecrypt. See attachment.
