Feature request: Intallation warning

Feature request: Intallation warning

Postby ninveh » Sun Oct 16, 2011 12:37 pm

Hello,

I have been using the pro edition 4.1.13 and decided to upgrade to 4.1.21. By mistake I downloaded the free edition from the cluster of available release files in the forum's beta/release section and apparently it clobbered all my extensive rules I labourly enetred during the past few months. I then installed the PRO edition (all installations are to the same original 4.1.13 folder), and now when I start to unblock program requests I get
"The current zone was customized and does not exist in the Zone list. The customization will be lost. Continue?"
Since I don's know where and how to retrieve past customizations, I just allow those requests and deal with manual re-customizations later.

I understnad that there is no way, based on my installation scenario, to retrieve past zone customiztion. Am I correct?

Also, may I suggest that the free edition would sense a prior PRO installation and pop-up a warning that zone customizations would be lost if continued.
Another feature request might be to add a "Save Rules" button to the PRO edition so people would not need to deal with registry modifications.

Free-to-Plus and Plus-to-Free on-the-top installations clear Programs and Zones lists actually. Free version installed over the Plus has to limit all the zone related features to the limited zones set available in the Free version.
Free-to-Plus on-the-top installation makes pervious limited (by the Free version) zones set senseless and forces the application to be redetected with the need to choose a better zone for them.

That’s correct. The problem was: All the detected applications are set with the default (configured in the settings tab) zone before W7FC prompts the user. After that, a zone chosen from the Zones repository is applied to the application by the user.
The default zone was kept from the previous version. The repository zone (applied to the application on the detection prompt) is created by the new installation and probably slightly different. W7FC compares the zones, finds the difference and warns that the zone with the same name will be overwritten.

You are correct.

Thank you, the option is scheduled.

Could you please clarify how(where to) you are going to restore the saved rules.
Passing the zones/rules to a different PC is mostly senseless.
Keeping the rules/zones intact through the upgrades is mostly senseless as well.
Plus-to-Plus and Free-to-Free updates keep all the settings intact.
Plus-to-Free and Free-to-Plus must rearrange the zones completely by intention.
Is it for accidental Plus-to-Free installations only?
Could you please clarify a possible scenario ?

Thank you for the detailed response.

Regarding the "save" option, I thought about helping the move to another computer (e.g. desktop to laptop) or re-building same computer. A good part of the programs on both desktop and laptop belonging to the same person is the same, therefore many of the firewall zones definitions and access rules are the same. The Zones that are irrelevant to the target computer can be manually deleted later.
