Dropbox files will be treated wrongly

Dropbox files will be treated wrongly

Postby chross » Thu Jun 23, 2011 8:51 pm

Hi,
I've sync'd a small game (Subvein) in my Dropbox folder to be able to create game maps from everywhere. The game itself need online access.

The problem is, that Win7FirewallControl will ask once if subvein.exe is to be allowed internet access. If I allow internet access and SAVE the setting, after a restart of my PC, Win7FirewallControl will not ask again (setting saved ok). But it will simply BLOCK internet access requests. I presume this is due to some hashing or slight differences in the exe files (caused by Dropbox). This is really super annoying as Subvein is not the only software I have installed in my Dropbox and that will require contant removal from the application list in Win7FirewallControl followed by a new addition. I believe this is a compatibility issue between Win7FirewallControl and Dropbox as when I run Subvein from a local installation, Win7FirewallControl will behave as expected and correctly apply the saved setting.

The only workaround is to allow the access ONLY ONCE and then again after a restart. This means a constant need for action where a single once-and-for-all setting would be much easier.

My config: Windows 7 64bit Prof, Windows 7 Firewall Control 4.1.14.73, , Microsoft Security Essentials AV (no other firewall or AV installed)

Cheers,
chross

Could you please specify where the dropbox folder is located: on a physical hard drive or on a virtual entity (Truecrypt drive, ramdrive etc)
If so the problem is pretty explained in FAQ (“TrueCrypt automounted devices”)
The latest beta (http://www.firewall-forum.com/the-latest-betas-releases-t6.html) includes the related fixes without a need to remark the driver type.

Anyway we were unable to reproduce the problem if the Dropbox folder is located on physical HDD.
Please provide us with more details, blocked notification messages (or the log file of Plus version). If a program is blocked by W7FC the blocking reason is specified precisely typically.
The message text could clarify the problem as well.

You were right. I'm using a TrueCrypt drive for the Dropbox folder. I will try the beta on Monday. Thanks for the fast response.
