Blocks network sharing

Blocks network sharing

Postby DarthFirewall » Sat Sep 11, 2010 12:17 am

I'm testing the Windows 7 Firewall Control, and one odd problem showed up at once:

It prevents other devices on my network to discover my network shares.

Why do I think this? Because when I select "Mode: Enable all" all the shares suddenly become visible.

Why is this - and can I do something about it?

When the firewall blocks it always shows blocking notification and updates blocked.log file.
Did you see any related notifications and/or blocked.log records? Usually the notifications/records specify the blocking reason/origin precisely.

Also the problem may be just an accident. The network discovery is based on UDP broadcasts.
“Discoverer” broadcasts a “is there anybody” message to the LAN and waits for answer(s) from the LAN for a timeout. UDP (as you could know) has no packet delivery confirmation so if the initial package is accidentally missed (due to network or discovering peer overload, for instance) the discovery will fail and the discovering process will be repeated.

Is the problem reproducible?

How about a quick explanation on how to get windows shares working normally with your application enabled? That would probably suffice.
Since installing your app, my windows network shares are no longer accessible, and there seems to be no option within your application to resolve the problem.

Also, how about a "minimize to tray" option. The taskbar button is ALWAYS present when the app is running, and just wastes screen space. This behavior is hardly befitting a what I would consider background process.

The app seems pretty solid, but it definitely needs polish before I could consider purchasing at your current asking price.

The sharing is supported by System and HostPorcess applications. The proper zone settings (LocalSystem and Local+DNS+DHCP(svchost) accordingly) to the applications enables the LAN sharing by default. If (accidentally) your LAN was switched off during W7FC installation and the LAN was not picked up automatically please use Settings/LANs button to adjust the LANs.

Please uncheck SettingsPane/Window7TaskBar integration
