Blocked app though EnableAll

Blocked app though EnableAll

Postby frank_harmann » Wed Jan 12, 2011 9:45 am

Hi,

i have set an application (nsclient++) to EnableAll, but the application is still blocked (at least parts of it).
I have the following message repeating in my log:
11.01.2011|16:56:22|IPv4 TCP 192.168.6.201:38301(5666)|nsclient++.exe|WindowsFirewall: Query User Incoming|C:\program files\nsclient++\nsclient++.exe

Any ideas?

Frank

I further investigated that problem and now i am totally confused.
I checked the windows firewall application setting and the application is listed as "Work/Home" (not checked) "public network" (checked).
When i removed the application in the windows firewall and sphinx and triggered it again and set it to "EnableAll" it is only shown in sphinx (but still blocking).
I was under the impression that sphinx is just a frontend to the windows firewall settings and does not apply/store settings on it own. Is this wrong? How do the sphinx settings and windows firewall settings interrelate?

Ok, i should probably have read the description:

The Built-in Firewall is based on the same WFP as well. The both products work entirely independently. Due to complete product independence you can switch the Built-in Firewall ON or OFF at your option.

Ok, so i will give turning off the standard firewall a try. EDIT: now it works as intended, my faul  t.

The explanation is pretty simple.
W7FC shows all the blocking notifications regardless of the origin, including notifications from WindowsFirewall (WF) as well.
So nsclient is blocked with an incoming by the WindowsFirewall filter titled as “query user”.
Most probably you will be able to find/manage the filter in “WindowsFirewall with Advanced Security “ or in another setting of WF.

Actually blocking decision takes the highest priority always (what is correct undoubtedly).
So even the application is enabled at W7FC it can be finally blocked at WF.
